Depo-Provera is injected into a muscle or under the skin, usually in the upper arm or the buttocks. For adult contraception, 150mg once every 13 weeks in either the deltoid or gluteal muscle is applied. For subcutaneous injections 104mg every 12 to 14 weeks into the abdomen or anterior thigh is performed. Although generally safe for use, there are some things to take note of when choosing this product. Patients should not use Depo-Provera if they have vaginal bleeding, liver disease, breast cancer, or if they are currently pregnant. If they have ever had a stroke or blood clot, it is also best to avoid this product. Patients should tell doctors if they have irregular or light menstrual periods, risk factors for osteoporosis, kidney disease, breast lump/s, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, asthma, migraines, or seizures.
Other Side Effects
Some of the benign and common side effects include:
- Changes in menstrual periods
- Stomach pain
- Weight gain

- Headache or dizziness
