JANSSEN BIOTECH (Simponi)

ABOUT THE BRAND

Formerly known as Centocor Biotech Inc., Janssen is a biotechnology company that was founded back in 1979 in Philadelphia. Their initial goal was to develop new diagnostic assays making use of monoclonal antibody technology. Their first US FDA-approved product was a diagnostic test that was used to detect the rabies virus in 1984, and 14 years after that they launched their top-selling monoclonal antibody called Remicade, with an initial approval indicated for Crohn’s disease. It is a subsidiary company, with the parent company being Johnson & Johnson, one of the companies who developed a Covid-19 vaccine that was approved for emergency use authorization.

One of Janssen’s products is Simponi, which was co-developed with Medarex Inc., and was FDA approved back in 2009. It is a prescription medicine that is used to treat severe rheumatoid arthritis, as well as other forms of arthritis. It performed well in clinical studies as well, with 55% of patients saying that they experienced around a 20% reduction in symptoms, as well as having observed an easier time in dressing themselves, walking, and eating.
