JANSSEN BIOTECH (Remicade)
ABOUT THE BRAND
Formerly known as Centocor Biotech Inc., Janssen is a biotechnology company that was founded back in 1979 in Philadelphia. Their initial goal was to develop new diagnostic assays making use of monoclonal antibody technology. Their first US FDA-approved product was a diagnostic test that was used to detect the rabies virus in 1984, and 14 years after that they launched their top-selling monoclonal antibody called Remicade, with an initial approval indicated for Crohn’s disease. It is a subsidiary company, with the parent company being Johnson & Johnson, one of the companies who developed a Covid-19 vaccine that was approved for emergency use authorization.
One of Janssen’s products is Remicade. It is manufactured in many of Janssen’s manufacturing sites, which are located in the Netherlands, Pennsylvania, as well as Switzerland. It is an anti-inflammatory which is used usually after other treatments have not produced adequate results. It targets diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and many more. Both clinical studies and actual cases have shown that the medication has elicited favorable responses in patients, with ulcerative colitis patients showing a 73% response rate, and Chron’s disease patients reporting a more effective response when used in combination with azathioprine compared to patients just using azathioprine.
