GENENTECH (Bonviva)

ABOUT THE BRAND

Genentech Inc. was founded back in 1976 by biochemist Herbert Boyer and venture capitalist Robert A. Swanson. Boyer is known as one of the forerunners in the field of recombinant DNA technology, and he along with colleague Stanley Norman Cohen were able to demonstrate how restriction enzymes could be used as a means to cut DNA fragments of interest from one source, and then ligated into a similarly cut plasmid vector. Cohen decided to return to academia, and then Swanson contacted Boyer to start the company. It is now a subsidiary of Roche, the largest pharmaceutical company in the world.

One of their many products is Bonviva, a medicine that comes in both tablet and injectable form. It is used to help protect postmenopausal women from vertebral and breaks and fractures. The formula works by blocking the cells that are involved in breaking down and degrading bone tissue, and studies and real-world cases have found that both forms of the medication are effective in not just preventing these breaks in fractures, but will also increase overall bone density in some areas.
