Hymovis
Buy Hymovis for your patients that need some pain relief from osteoarthritis. This product especially targets the joints in the knee, clearing up the pain caused by the bones rubbing together. It can also be used in the conservative treatment of the meniscal lesion in the same area.
What Makes a Good Candidate?
Technically, any patient is legally able to make use of this product as long as they are already 18 years old and above. However, even if the patient does suffer osteoarthritis, it doesn’t mean this solution will be the best one for them considering that this was specifically developed for use on patients who have tried basic analgesics or regular non-pharmacologic therapies, and still find themselves in pain. Hymovis can also be used for improving joint mobility, as it has enhanced synovial fluid viscoelasticity.
Areas Treated with Hymovis
The solution targets joints that have chronic pain due to the rubbing together of the bones, degrading their structure and causing discomfort. Hymovis is specifically used on the knee joint, as other common target joints for osteoarthritis pain have yet to have fully established effectivity and safety studies.
How does Hymovis work?
Hymovis is a non-pyrogenic, sterile, hydrogel that is manufactured with hexadeclyamide also known as Hyadd4. It is obtained via bacterial fermentation of highly purified sodium hyaluronate, and it is encased in an isotonic buffered solution. Because of the solution’s inherent high elasticity and viscosity obtained from the hexadeclyamide of sodium hyaluronate, the solution drastically improves shock-absorbing and lubricating functions of synovial fluid.
Synovial fluid, found in the joint and can sometimes degrade over time leading to bone rubbing and pain, has high resistance to mechanical stress, and is great at protecting the soft tissues and cartilage from any degradation or destruction. All of this, combined with how long the treatment has shown to last in the joints, make Hymovis a great vanguard against the pain caused by osteoarthritis and other issues from the meniscal lesion.
The solution includes disodium hydrogen, sodium chloride, sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, phosphate dodecahydrate, and water for the injection.
Treatment Details
Hymovis should only be applied by trained medical professionals with the necessary experience to administer such products on patients. There are different treatment cycles for the product depending on the kind of treatment it’s supposed to give, namely two injections over a one-week interval for osteoarthritic joint pain relief, and two injections administered over a two-week interval for meniscal lesion treatment.
This product is only intended for intra-articular injections. Because of the product’s inherent viscosity, injection should be slowly administered via an 18 or 20G needle into the affected joint. Aseptic administration should be strictly followed, and any joint effusion present in the area should be removed prior to Hymovis application.
How Long Does Hymovis Last?
The actual duration of the treatment’s effects will vary per case as it is determined by physiology and lifestyle. Generally speaking, though, the product is known to last for as long as 6 months. Any further treatment or maintenance appointments will be up to the doctor’s discretion.
Safety Information
Being both CE Marked and FDA approved, Hymovis has already shown just how safe it is for use. However, there are still contraindications to caution patients who should not be using this product. Pregnant or lactating women shouldn’t use this, and neither should minors. Those with a hypersensitivity or allergy from any of the compounds used in the solution should avoid the product, and the safety and efficacy of Hymovis when used together with other intra-articular treatments have neither been explored nor established. The syringe is a single use one only, and should only be applied to one knee. Quaternary ammonium salts should not be used concomitantly with the solution.
