How does Actemra work?
Actemra contains the active ingredient tocilizumab is a kind of monoclonal antibody which is a kind of protein that was developed to target specific antigens in the body. This particular medication targets the receptor for a messenger molecule also known as a cytokine named interleukin-6. This cytokine is a part of what causes the inflammation in some diseases, and can be found in large amounts with rheumatoid arthritis, giant cell arteritis, and Covid-19. The solution attaches to the target receptors and will then cause a reduction in the inflammation the patient is experiencing, as well as other symptoms.
Treatment Details
Actemra is often introduced via an injection under the skin or into a vein. The medicine is usually administered every one to four weeks, depending on the condition. For CRS, usually only one dose is given. When introduced into the vein, it happens over a period of about 1 hour. For every administration, another site must be targeted as not one site should be injected into twice in a row. For more information on dosing, please refer to the product leaflet.
How long does Actemra last?
For giant cell arteritis, this medication is used for up to 1 year usually. For CRS, it is only used for a short period of time, usually when symptoms are resolved at around 1 or 2 weeks. The duration is largely dependent on what kind of disease is being treated, and the full list of which can be found in the package insert.
